Inogen portable oxygen concentrators are the most popular models when it comes to portable oxygen therapy. Inogen is known for their small, lightweight, and reliable concentrators. Here we will compare the Inogen One G3 to the Inogen One G4.

Oxygen Delivery

The G3 and G4 both provide pulse flow oxygen delivery which dispenses a bolus (burst) of oxygen each time a breath is detected. This type of oxygen delivery uses smaller components than concentrator that provide continuous flow oxygen, which allows for a smaller, lighter unit. The G3 provides 1-5 pulse flow settings while the G4 provides 1-3 pulse flow settings.

Both the G3 and G4 incorporate Inogen’s Intelligent Delivery Technology. This breath detection technology is fast and sensitive to ensure that the oxygen is delivered at the beginning of the breath cycle which is the most critical time. It also compensates for decreased breath rates by triggering a larger bolus size based on a fixed minute volume. Conversely, a faster breath rate will result in smaller bolus size which may lead to out-breathing the capacity of the machine. If you are consistently short of breath while using an Inogen, it may be due to a fast breath rate and you may require a different model to meet your oxygen needs.

Another feature of Inogen units is the auto pulse mode. Many oxygen therapy patients will tend to breath out of their mouth. When this happens breath is not detected and oxygen is not delivered. If breath is not detected an audible alert will sound. If it is still not detected the concentrator will go into auto pulse mode which will dispense intermittent boluses of oxygen until breath is detected.

Size & Weight

Weighing only 2.8 lbs. (3.5 lbs. with a large battery), the Inogen One G4 is the lightest concentrator on the market which provides 1 – 3 pulse flow settings. The Inogen One G3 weighs 4.8 lbs. (5.8 lbs. with a large battery), which is the lightest concentrator that provides 1-5 pulse flow settings.

Battery Time

Both concentrators come with two battery options–a small (single) battery which keeps the unit lighter and a large (double) battery which doubles the battery time on most settings. The Inogen One G4’s single battery has 4 cells and the double battery has 8 cells, while the Inogen One G3’s single battery has 8 cells and the double battery has 16 cells. Because of the Inogen One G3’s larger batteries, it does provide about twice the battery time.
In addition to batteries, both concentrators come with an AC power adapter so that is can run continuously while plugged into a wall outlet. They also come with a DC power adapter which can be plugged into an auxiliary power outlet in a car. This is beneficial as it can run from the car battery, enabling you to have a full battery charge when you reach your destination.

Note: All battery times are manufacturer specifications and based on a low breath rate. Actual battery durations experienced by our customers is usually lower. For instance, the G3 16-cell battery typically lasts 8 hours (rather than 9).

Airplane Travel

The Inogen One G3 and G4 satisfy the FAA requirements for air travel. The small size and long battery time are ideal for air travel.

If increased oxygen output is required and longer battery times are desired then look toward the Inogen G3. With a weight of 4.8 lbs., the G3 is still one of the lighter concentrators available anywhere. Many oxygen therapy patients might require increased oxygen in the future. With 1 – 5 pulse flow settings many see increased value in the G3 as a better long-term solution. Also, the G3 provides about double the battery time as the G4, allowing for longer excursions and greater peace of mind while away from a power source.

If you are new to oxygen therapy and your oxygen requirements are minimal, or if size and weight are the most important due to factors such as shoulder and back issues, then the G4 is an ideal fit. It is not only smaller and lighter than the G3, but it also may be carried around one’s waist, thus alleviating back and shoulder pressure.

The Inogen One G3 and Inogen One G4 are two of the best POCs in their class and we are confident recommending each of these models if they meet your oxygen requirements.

Understanding Your Oxygen Order Before You Buy a POC
  • Oxygen is prescribed by a control of the flow rate, i.e., liter flow. The common 1-3 liters per minute continuous flow is not appropriate in all situations. This could be too much or not enough.

  • Precision in the use of the proper flow, or amount of oxygen, is necessary. The flow of oxygen should achieve the normal amount of oxygen in your blood, expressed as a saturation above 90%.

What to Know Before You Buy a POC
  • Portable Oxygen Concentrators produce oxygen, they do not store oxygen.
  • Portable concentrators produce varying levels of oxygen per minute, which allows for an acceptable dose of oxygen every breath you take.
  • Portable concentrators that weigh 2 to 8 pounds only deliver oxygen on-demand pulse flow. Manufacturers of these devices place arbitrary numbers such as 1-3 or 1-6 to refer to the size of the pulse flow of oxygen and are not the same as liter flow. These settings are considered liter flow equivalents. Also, these devices do not all produce the same amount of oxygen at a given setting.
Why Self-Monitor Before You Buy a POC
  • Many people commonly check their blood pressure, blood sugar or air flow rate (peak flow) at home. We can measure temperature and weight whenever we have the need.
  • We can now measure our blood oxygen and pulse rate at home as well, using a simple pulse oximeter. A common word used when measuring oxygen is titration.
  • Titrating is the measurement of what your oxygen equipment setting is achieving in the arterial blood. It’s the blood that energizes the tissue. By taking your own measurements, you can adjust your oxygen setting for any situation and with any portable oxygen concentrator
Who to Ask Before You Buy a POC
  • We understand that finding a portable oxygen concentrator that accommodates both lifestyle and oxygen needs can be a difficult process for both you and your loved one. Our respiratory team will take the time necessary to choose the right portable concentrator for your respiratory needs.
  • Our trial period on all portable oxygen concentrators assures your oxygen needs are met.

* This is a general statement. Your physician must prescribe your specific target saturation level.

Inogen One G3 Product Overview

Currently one of the smallest, lightest portable concentrators that produces medical oxygen and offers an extremely long lasting battery is the Inogen One G3. The oxygen machine was created to provide users with the highest level of independence. Smaller in size, lighter in weight, and produces more oxygen per pound than its predecessor, the Inogen One G2. Not requiring the use of a rolling cart, it is a portable concentrator that you can hold in one hand. You will never have to worry about oxygen running out, because this unit never needs to be refilled.

The Inogen G3 is ultra light, weighing in less than 5 pounds with the 8 cell battery and 5.7 with a 16 cell battery and includes a carry bag that can be worn over your shoulder for easy mobilization. The batteries were created and piloted to last a very long time. At a setting of 2 the 8 cell battery can last up to 4 hours, also at a setting of 2 the 16 cell battery can last up to 7 to 8 hours as well. With a faster than normal recharge time, the rechargeable batteries can reload in a few short hours. The 8 cell battery will recharge in 4 hours on average and the 16 cell battery will recharge in 6 hours. This unit is one of the smallest sized oxygen concentrators ever produced, measuring  only 7.25 inches tall, 3 inches wide and 8.75 inches long. With oxygen concentration levels at around 90%, It is a pulse dose portable concentrator that operates on setting from 1 to 5. At only 39 decibels, the machine is barely noticeable. The unit can hardly be heard! So discreet that you can use it in a library or church without hearing it. Flow settings and battery life are beautifully highlighted on the easy to read LCD screen.

Airline approved for user ability during flights. Also can be used on most cruise ships and buses, making the Inogen G3 an excellent breathing companion for travel far and near!

Included in the Inogen One G3 Starter Package is: 8 cell battery, AC power supply, DC power cable, carry bag, cannula and manual.
