Traditionally, oxygen concentrators have provided a continuous supply of oxygen to a patient regardless of whether the patient was inhaling or exhaling. All home oxygen concentrators provide continuous flow oxygen.

A pulse-dose technology provides a means to deliver oxygen in fixed increments that correspond to the inhalation component of a patient's breathing cycle. In other words, it gives the patient a puff of oxygen right when he/she inhales. In doing so, pulse-dose technology prevents oxygen from being wasted. Pulse-dosed oxygen can be provided on a traditional oxygen tank by means of a conserving device, thus allowing the oxygen in the tank to last longer. Portable oxygen concentrators have a built-in conserving device, which increases the efficiency of an oxygen concentrator, and allows them to be much smaller and more portable than home concentrators.
Some portable oxygen concentrators provide a continuous or pulse flow of oxygen. These include the SeQual Eclipse 3, DeVilbiss iGo, Invacare Solo2, Oxlife Independence, and Respironics SimplyGo.
Other portable oxygen concentrator provide only pulse flow oxygen. These include the Respironics EverGo, Invacare XPO2, Inogen One G2, and Inova LifeChoice.

An Oxygen Concentrator uses the ambient air (the air in the room), which is normally 80% nitrogen and only 20% Oxygen. The oxygen concentrator separates the two components by using zeolite granules to selectively absorb nitrogen from the compressed air. The compressor raises the air pressure to about 20-lbs per square inch (P.S.I). The compressed air is introduced into one of the canisters containing zeolite granules where nitrogen is selectively absorbed leaving the residual oxygen available for patient use. After about 20 seconds the supply of compressed air is automatically diverted to the second canister where the process is repeated enabling the output of oxygen continue uninterrupted. While the pressure in the second canister is at 20 P.S.I. the pressure in the first canister is reduced to zero. This allows nitrogen to be released from the zeolite and returned into the atmosphere. The zeolite is then regenerated and ready for the next cycle. By alternating the pressure in the two canisters so that first one and then the other is at 20 P.S.I., a constant supply of oxygen is produced while the zeolite is continually being regenerated. Individual units have an output of up to five liters per minute with an oxygen concentration of up to 95%.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has provided a booklet that explains the benefits for durable medical equipment (including oxygen equipment). Durable Medical Equipment is medical equipment that is ordered by a doctor for use in the home. Durable medical equipment includes things like the following: Home oxygen equipment Hospital beds Walkers Wheelchairs Medicare does not purchase oxygen equipment. Medicare provides for oxygen equipment only on a rental basis. "Medicare pays for most durable medical equipment on a rental basis. Medicare only purchases inexpensive or routinely purchased items, such as canes, power wheelchairs, and, in rare cases, items that must be made specifically for you." (See page 8) "If you rent durable medical equipment and other devices, Medicare makes only monthly payments for use of the equipment. The rules for how long monthly payments continue vary based on the type of equipment." (See page 9) "If you rent oxygen equipment, Medicare will pay for up to 36 months of rental payments. After 36 months, your supplier is required to continue furnishing the equipment as long as it is medically necessary. After 36 months, Medicare will also pay for oxygen contents for any gaseous or liquid oxygen equipment you rent." (See page 10)
